The end of this year's Echinops

This week's Wordless Wednesday/ The Echinops (globe thistle) has grown. flowered and is now dying back until next year. All that is left is for the dead flower heads to release their seeds. Ah, the circle of life

beautiful shot!! Enjoy the new season.

A further way in which it contributes to the circle of life, is by acting as a self-service buffet for finches and other seed-eating birds. Great pic, Shaunie. Happy WW! Mine will be up sometime in the next few minutes/

Cool close-up! Thanks for the vote -- Bosco's my top choice, too!! (I'm really liking Pepper and Shadow though, and I'm betting those will appeal more to my 2 little girls, too.)

We are at the start of the spring cycle. It is around 28 degrees and sunny here. I love these kinds of structural plant and of course a thistle is somewhat Scottish.

This would make my sister's heart race with exhilaration - she adores collecting seeds and thinking about where she's going to plant them, all through the winter months. Lovely WW, Jams!

I've been finding, this season, the beauty of these seed heads, also. If I wasn't sick, I'd be out there now taking photos. How'd you get the black background?

Queen of My Domain said...

What a very cool photo. And very much symbolizes the cycle of life.

Thats a really great shot.

It looks so sad.

jams o donnell said...

Thanks. Andree the dark background comes from shooting against a subdued background. I use a macro lens stopped down to maximise depth of field. I use a specialist ringflash which is not as powerful as a standard flashgun. The flash light, therefore, does not travel as far.

What this means is that I can get clouse up shots with good definition and dark backgrounds

Well...I NEVER would have known what an Echinops is, but I do know what a globe thistle is! Very profound...the circle of life!

Happy WW!

Please don't encourage the dead flower heads to release their seed, jams. Hasn't the world got enough Grateful Dead hippies??!!?

Ooooh, the verification is

Pig Latin, anyone?

Yikes are there still dead heads now that Gerry Garcia is pusihing up the daisies? I suppose they will never die just disappear in a cloud of "herbal" smoke
